Dr. Tyree Wieder

OCCUPATION:
President, Los Angeles Valley College

CONGREGATION:
Temple Ahavat Shalom, Northridge, California

FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD:
Matzah ball soup—real comfort food.

FAVORITE JEWISH MEMORY:
Sitting with my father-in-law on the day of my conversion. With tears in his eyes he thanked me for my decision. The youngest of twenty-one children born to his parents in Hungary, he lost all but five of his brothers and sisters in the Holocaust. He never asked me to embrace his faith... and now, knowing that his grandchildren would be raised as Jews, he was moved more than he ever anticipated.

FAVORITE TEMPLE EXPERIENCE:
Our daughter Shavonne’s bat mitzvah. She spoke of her African-American and Jewish ancestors as having suffered similar fates in history and the strength this heritage had given her. Celebrating with her were people of different races and religions—as the world should be.
